Chronic illness is at an all-time high with no signs of relief. Millions of Americans are stuck in a loop asking why do I feel this way? Is this normal? Why is the rest of my family not sick? Maybe this is all in my head like my doctors are saying?
Many of the most common chronic conditions in the U.S. are the result of bad habits such as poor diet and lifestyle. “Chronic disease and long-term illnesses, such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer, now affect half of all adults in the Western world,” according to Nicholas Rumble, CEO of Curiazon. However, medical practitioners are beginning to beyond diet and focus on how our environments can be affecting health.
There is a rapidly growing diagnosis plaguing many with chronic health symptoms, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Mast cells are responsible for causing allergic reactions; they release histamine and other mediators that are related to inflammation and reaction.
Some symptoms include:
- skin: itching, flushing, hives, sweating
- eyes: itching, watering
- nose: itching, running, sneezing
- mouth and throat: itching, swelling in your tongue or lips, swelling in your throat that blocks air from getting to your lungs
- lungs: trouble breathing, wheezing
- heart and blood vessels: low blood pressure, rapid heart rate
- stomach and intestines: cramping, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- nervous system: headache, dizziness, confusion, extreme tiredness
Triggers causing mast cells to degranulate can be vast and random, some include foods, odors, chemicals, and mold. Mold is present everywhere indoors and outdoors with over 100,000 different known species. However, not all molds are created equal. There are certain mold species that grow in water-damaged buildings. Many of these mold types produce potent bi-products that can impact the occupants.
Mold spores, similar to seeds, are released into the air and into our breathing zone. Some of the mold species wrap the spores in a toxin called Mycotoxins. Mycotoxins can accumulate in the body, continuing to wreak havoc long after the initial exposure occurs. In some cases, it can require an extensive course of treatment.
Receiving a diagnosis for chronic illness is a shock to the system and not only affects the body, but it also affects the whole person’s emotions. The roadmap to recovery will vary from person to person and by the condition.
